This is a brief introduction to the concept of the ‘Narrator’ in literature. In this first of its two parts, I set out the distinction between ‘homodiegetic’ narrators, who belong to the same universe as the narrative action, and ‘heterodiegetic’ narrators, which or who know about the narrative universe, but do not operate according to its rules.
