‘Snowdrops’ and the English Expatriate in Russia

March 2014

This informal paper concerning AD Miller’s 2011 Booker-shortlisted novel set in Moscow in 2003 discusses the position of the English Expatriate in Russia, and to what extent this novel conforms to norms of contemporary British attitudes towards and media coverage of Russia. The representation of the Moscow of the early 2000s made by Miller, then Moscow correspondent for The Economist, is compared with the Moscow of the author’s own recollection of living there in the same period.

This was given as a lecture at an international conference at Minsk State Linguistic University on September 27th, 2012.
