What does it mean for a novel to be multi-plotted? Does not a novel has as many plots as characters? And if not, how do we count the plots? This lecture offers answers to these questions, and investigates the particularly suggestive – and difficult – form of double-plotted novel, such as Lev Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina and George Eliot’s Daniel Deronda.
